Snapchat Friend Emojis — The New Snapchat Best Friends: FAQ

We’ve talked about Snapchat Best Friends extensively in our previous posts.

Between January 2015 and April 2015, Snapchat released two updates that affected the best friends feature. In the first update, the best friends feature was completely removed. We were no longer able to see who our best friends are, and who others’ best friends are. We had mixed reactions to it — some of us loved it; some of us hated it. Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel promised us it would be back in a new form.

In the latest update (6th April 2015), Snapchat brought back the best friends feature as promised, but with a twist.

Snapchat Friend Emojis

Snapchat Friend Emojis are the new “best friends”. Before we all start freaking out again however, let’s take a closer look at how Snapchat Friend Emojis work. Your thoughts on the new Snapchat feature are always welcome; please share using the comment form.

Okay, so what exactly are these new Snapchat Emojis?

Snapchat Friend Emoji is simply a new feature which tells the user who they message the most by using emojis. There are six main emojis to replace the best friends list and all of these appear just after the names of the people in your list. Each of these stands for how strong your friendship is with your Snapchat friends.

Here’s what Snapchat’s Friend Emojis mean:

Gold/Yellow Heart – You Are Number One Best Friends – This emoji will appear after the name of the person who you send the most snaps to and who also sends the most number of snaps to you.

Grimace/Face With Teeth Out – You Have A Mutual Number One Best Friend – This indicates that the person you send the most snaps to(i.e; your Best Friend – Yellow Heart) is also who this person sends the most snaps to.

Smile – One Of Your Best Friends – This indicates that you send snaps to this person often but not the most.

Sunglasses – You Have A Mutual Best Friend – This indicates that you both send lots of snaps to the same person.

Smirk/Flirting Face – You Are Their Best Friend But They Are Not Your’s – This indicates that they send snaps the most to you but you don’t send snaps back to them the most.

Fire – You Are On A Snapstreak – This indicates that you and this person have sent snaps to each other back and forth for the number of consecutive days which is shown next to the fire emoji.

What does Snapchat look like now?

Snapchat’s latest update is rumored to be more of an attempt to make Snapchat look like a game, where users will have the urge to snap more so that they could get the Fire emoji or other rewards for using it. However the new update of using Emojis rather than the Best Friends feature proves to be more appreciated for privacy issue, which, in the old feature, was able to let you see who snapped you the most and also who your friends snapped the most. With the Emoji update the Best Friends list is no longer publicly displayed. The emojis and the numbers you see are now only for yourself and not for everyone in your friend circle.

Is this Snapchat update good or bad?

Now with this advantage of not being able to see others’ Best Friends list, a lot of questions are being speculated on whether this application is a a good one or a bad one. Good; for those who want to flirt around without getting caught by their fiancés, and Bad; for those jealous and over-protective boyfriends and girlfriends who would want to checkout their loved ones’ Best Friends list the whole time.

And yes, a lot of drama is in the offering. For instance, if a Smirk Face appears next to the name of the person you considered to be your Best Friend or if that someone special has a Fire emoji with double digits next to his/her ex or if you have that Fire emoji next to your ex, then you are bound to ask yourself a question on whether you and your friends are faithful enough to each other or not.

Here is the fun part, you can compete with your friends by sharing and comparing screenshots of who has the longest Snapstreak or who has what Emoji next to his/her crush. For all of these, Snapchat will become not only an obsession but also more like a game(which seems to be their main intention).

There are also two other new features in this update; the ‘Low-Light Camera’ feature and the ‘Needs-Love’ section. The ‘Low-Light Camera’ feature is an attempt to lighten dark photos and videos, there is a brightening button at the top of the camera that appears as a ‘Half-Moon’ icon. This feature can be enabled when you are trying to take photos or videos in the dark by tapping the ‘Half-Moon’ icon and the brightness will improve.
The ‘Needs-Love’ section is just a reminder to connect with contacts of whom you haven’t been snapping for a while.

All in all, the new Snapchat update gives you better privacy advantages and improves your low-lighted photos and videos. For now let us hope that we will get better and more exiting features from the updates to come.

How long does a best friend emoji stay next to a name after a period of inactivity? Are these emojis based on a certain period of time?

If you only have one best friend on snapchat and there was a yellow heart next to their name and one next to your name on theirs and then their yellow heart turned to a smiley face.. But you don’t snap anyone else.. Why would that happen? What does it mean? The heart on your name remains on their snap though

is it possible if snapchat become a lil bit lag? i’ve got a bf emoji issue. i’ve snap with my friend all day all night since last 2 weeks. in my opinion we must’ve become #1 bf right? but only smile emoji appears next to her name. and recently her logo turns to gold love, but it only lasts for some minutes, then it turn back to smile again. it already happened twice this week.
