Snapchat Best Friends: Know Your Emoji

When Snapchat first started, it introduced a very creepy feature called ‘Best Friends’. These best friends — people you exchange the most number of snaps with — are displayed on your profile. Everyone who visits your profile can see who your 3 best friends are. This led to a number of fights and break-ups, seeing as how Snapchat was used for sending nudes on many occasions.

An update in January 2015 did away with the old Snapchat best friends and introduced Snapchat Emojis.

Snapchat Emojis are smarter, and have more privacy. Only you are able to see these emojis. And what’s more, by carefully studying these emojis, you are able to tell a lot about your friends and your relationship with them.

Since we have covered a lot about emojis in other posts, we’ll only take a look at the Best Friends Emoji in this post. The Snapchat best friends emoji is a little less confusing than its predecessor, but to an untrained eye, it could be a nightmare.

Snapchat Best Friends, also in the new Snapchat, are people you exchange the most number of snaps with. This is indicated by emojis that appear next to friend’s name in your contacts.

Snapchat Has 6 Best Friends Emojis

You might not realise this, but Snapchat actually has 6 best friend emojis. These are:

💛 Gold Heart Emoji

The Gold Heart emoji is the most important best friend emoji. It is, simply put, the actual indicator of whether or not you are best friends with a person.

When a gold heart emoji appears next to a friend’s name in your inbox, it means that he/she is your best friend; you have exchanged the most number of snaps with this person.

It doesn’t matter if he/she is your best friend in real life, as far as Snapchat is concerned, you are best friends. You have a gold heart to testify to this.

The gold heart is only the beginning. You only have been best friends for a while.

Red Heart Emoji

A red heart emoji means that you have been best friends with this person for at least 2 weeks.

The trick to getting a red heart is nothing but sending snaps to your best friend over and over. Sending snaps to multiple recipients in Snapchat is easy. You simply tap on multiple recipients. Every time you send out a snap, make sure your best friend is on the recipients list.

This will ensure you a red heart emoji.

💕 Pink Hearts Emoji

The pink hearts emoji is even better. It also indicates the duration for which you have been friends. When a pink heart emoji appears next to a friend’s name, it means that you have been best friends for more than 2 months.

The pinks hearts emoji is the highest level of friendship you can attain on Snapchat. It takes a bit of work to achieve this emoji.

😬 Grimace Emoji

The grimace emoji is a two-timing emoji, a cheating best friend. When a grimace appears next to a friend’s name, it means that you are sharing a best friend with that person. His/her best friend is also your best friend.

😊 Smile Emoji

A smile emoji on Snapchat indicates that the person is a close friend. He/she is not your #1 best friend, just someone you send out a lot of snaps to, but not the most.

To make a close friend your best friend, you need to keep exchanging more snaps with that person.

😎 Sunglasses Emoji

The Sunglasses Emoji means that you share a close friend. One of your close friends (smile emoji) is also a close friend of that person.

😏 Smirk Emoji

The smirk best friend emoji means that you are that person’s best friend, but he/she is not your best friend. In other words, that person has sent you the most number of snaps, but you have not sent the most number of snaps to that person. Something to be proud of, if you look at it that way.

Now that we’re familiar with all the Snapchat best friends emojis, let’s take a look at how you can manipulate your best friends settings.

How to Add Best Friends on Snapchat

You cannot literally add best friends on Snapchat. But you can pave your way to making someone your #1 best friend.

To do this, simply keep sending snaps to the person you want to make your best friend. When you have accumulated enough number of snaps between the two of you, the best friend emoji (gold star) will appear next to his/her name.

Making someone your best friend on Snapchat is one task, the next is keeping one. In order to keep someone as a best friend, make sure that all the snaps you send out is also sent to your best friend.

Snapchat allows you to send snaps to multiple recipients, make good use of this feature. Always copy a snap to your best friend, after all he/she’s your best friend.

How to Remove Best Friends on Snapchat

There is no one tap button to remove best friends on Snapchat. As usual, there is a work-around involved.

Earlier, it was possible to remove best friends on Snapchat by blocking and unblocking the person. Unfortunately, users have reported that this method does not work anymore.

As of now, it looks like the only solution is by not sending snaps to that person. It makes sense that if a person is not your best friend, there is no reason to send him/her all of your snaps.

So in order to remove someone as your #1 best friend on Snapchat, stop sending him/her snaps. Communicate less. Snapchat with others more. This way, the snap count between the two of you will decrease, eventually replacing him/her with a new best friend.

The mechanism of Snapchat best friends is pretty simple: it is based on the number of snaps sent and/or received. As such, you have full control over who is your best friend or not. The more you snapchat with a person, the more likely he/she becomes your new best friend.
