How to Add Friends on Snapchat

Although Snapchat has grown to be among the most popular social networking platforms in the world, the app is quite difficult to use for first-time users.

We’ve published a really long guide on how to use Snapchat in an earlier post. And we’ve covered briefly how to find and add new friends in that post.

We’ll dig a little deeper in this post and show you how you can not only add people on Snapchat, but also discover more people to follow, including celebrities.

The point of social networks is to connect and share with your friends. The case is the same for celebrities — to connect with their fans.

While most social networking platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. allow you to discover people easily, by enabling sharing features for your posts, Snapchat does not have any feature to share and re-share posts. This makes it extremely difficult to discover new people.

What’s more, everything happens so fast in Snapchat. You’re only given a few seconds to view snaps, after which they are gone forever. You cannot do a lot of things within that time, can you?

And like all social networks, Snapchat is no fun if you do not have friends on it.

There are 4 ways you can add people on Snapchat, we’ll take a look at these one by one, showing you how you can discover and find new friends.

Let’s get started by tapping on the necessary icons:

1. Open Snapchat. This will bring up your camera screen.

2. Tap on the GHOST icon. The Ghost/Snapchat icon is at the top of your camera screen.

This will bring up your profile screen. My profile screen looks like this:

When you have reached your profile screen, we can proceed on to the next steps.

1. Adding People on Snapchat — From Address Book

From your profile screen, tap on the Add Friends link. This will bring up the Add Friends screen, which looks like the one below:

We shall start by adding friends from your phone’s Address Book. This is the easiest way to find friends. If you have a lot of contacts on your phone, you can be sure there will be some of your friends who are already using Snapchat.

On your Address Book screen that comes up, you will see a list of Snapchatters in My Contacts. Take a look at the screenshot below:

To add friends from your Address Book to your Snapchat, tap on the + icon next to their names.

If you have just added someone to your contacts and he/she has not appeared on your Address Book in Snapchat, tap on the refresh icon at the top right corner of your screen.

2. Adding People on Snapchat — by Username

Adding people on Snapchat by their usernames is easy, but knowing the usernames of all the people you want to add is difficult. And Snapchat doesn’t help either. It does not allow you to search for people using their names, unless they are celebrities and their usernames have been verified by Snapchat.

So, the only way you can make this feature work is if you know the username of the person you want to add.

We have compiled a list of usernames of celebrities and sexy girls to get you started: 300 Snapchat Usernames to Follow

To add people on Snapchat by their username, go to the Add Friends screen and tap on Add by Username.

Enter the username of the person, wait until the + icon appears, tap on it.

If the + (Add Friend) icon does not appear, it means that the username you have entered is incorrect and there’s no person by that username on Snapchat’s database.

Snapchat also verifies profiles (stories) of celebrities and famous people, including Snapchat users with lots of influences. You can add this people by typing their names. When you enter their names, their usernames will appear under Official Stories.

For instance, when you type in Justin Bieber, his username (rickthesizzler) will appear.

Verified profiles have a verified icon next to their usernames, like the one above. This icon will be different for different verified users.

3. Add People on Snapchat — using Snapcode

Snapcode is a very interesting feature of Snapchat introduced only very recently.

Snapcode is the yellow square with rounded corners that have black dots on it. This is my snapcode:

Everyone who uses Snapchat is assigned a different Snapcode. You can see your Snapcode on your profile screen.

To add someone on Snapchat by his/her Snapcode, you first need to have an image file containing his/her snapcode in your phone’s camera roll or gallery.

For instance, if you wanted to add me using my snapcode, you’d take a screenshot of my snapcode given in this post. Or download the image file to your phone.

Then, go to your Add Friends screen and tap on the Add by Snapcode. You will see all the photos from your camera roll or gallery. Tap on the photo containing the snapcode to start scanning the code. Once, it starts scanning, Snapchat icon will appear on the selected photo.

If Snapchat detects a profile after scanning the photo with the snapcode, it will pop up the profile of that user and ask you to Add Friend or Cancel.

Tap on ‘Add Friend’ to add the person.

4. Adding People on Snapchat — using GPS

Just like bluetooth, it’s possible to detect Snapchat users that are close-by by enabling GPS on your phone.

Tap on Add Nearby.

To use this feature, you will have to enable Location Services with High Accuracy location mode (GPS) on your device.

When you click Okay, you will be taken to your phone’s Location Settings. Activate the High Accuracy location mode.

Go back to Snapchat, people who use Snapchat that are close-by will be featured on the screen. Tap on the + icon to add them.

Note that the people who are close-by need to activate their High Accuracy location mode too. The principle is much like Bluetooth. Just as you both need to turn on your bluetooth services, you need to turn on your GPS and open Snapchat ‘Add Nearby’.

This feature is most useful when a group of you are in the same room and wants to add each other on Snapchat. You could all simply turn on your GPS and go to Add Nearby feature on Snapchat.
